Shalom,

Tonight begins Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom HaShoah as it is called in Hebrew.

Even as it slowly retreats into history, the Holocaust has tremendous meaning for Jews, especially the many that had relatives that went through it.

My wife, for example, has a very close relative who a girl was sent by the Nazis to Auschwitz.

Auschwitz was the largest Nazi death camp, where almost a million Jews were killed.  All 4 members of this girl’s immediate family were murdered there.

But the story didn’t end there.

Somehow she survived, found her way out of Europe after the war, got married and raised a family.  And moved to Israel.

Her children grew up and had children of their own.  Who then grew up, and most of them now have children of their own.

This “girl” is now an older woman with many grandchildren and many, many great-grandchildren.  Her oldest great-grandchildren are now getting married too.  She now has at least 2 great-great-grandchildren, and I am sure many more on the way.

Hitler (may his name be erased), however, is still dead.

So has the Jewish people risen up many, many times after tragedy during its long history.

Many see the creation of the modern State of Israel so soon after the Holocaust as the latest example.

In a stunning reversal of fate, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) sent 3 F-15 fighter jets to fly over the same Auschwitz death camp that I wrote about above.

Surreal.

With a contingent of Israeli soldiers and commanders on the ground, the flight commander transmitted a moving speech during the flight.

You can see various versions of the video of the event on YouTube.

But we have adapted the video to be a Hebrew resource for you.

We added a transcript of the Hebrew with vowels, a transliteration, and a new translation of the pilot’s words which I think do them more justice.

If you want some inspiration, maybe even some chills up your spine, check it out here:
