Weekly Torah Study: Emor

“But on the tenth of this seventh month, it is a day of atonement, it shall be a holy occasion for you; you shall afflict yourselves, and you shall offer up a fire offering to HaShem.” (Leviticus 23:27) What is the nature of the atonement described in Torah? Did it require an act of repentance? Was it a way of leaving the past behind?
